Emerald is one of the four cardinal precious gems, the others being sapphire, ruby, and of course, the diamond. The word “emerald” comes from Latin “Esmeralda”, and can probably be traced back to the Hebrew “izmargad”, and the strikingly similar sounding Sanskrit word “Margadha”. The rich hue of a good emerald is so captivating that the name has become a popular adjective that describes anything that is an intense and beautiful green, such as the term “Emerald Isle”, a popular reference to Ireland. Emerald Earrings Emeralds are a form of beryl that are rare to find, but occur usually in sources of coal almost all over the world. While grading emeralds, experts bear in mind the Colour, Cut, Clarity and Crystal – this last term refers to the transparency of the stone, and is a very important determinant of grade, next only to colour. Emerald is the birthstone of May, and is considered the talisman gemstone of the astrological signs Taurus and Cancer. In many cultures, emeralds are considered a symbol of fertility and prosperity, possessing the ability to protect the wearer from harm and misfortune. More recently, emeralds are considered the traditional gemstones for the 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries. This month, CaratLane’s Emerald birthstone collection brings out the best of these vibrant gemstones – Rings, earrings and pendants that are set with emerald solitaires, or emeralds alongside diamonds to amplify the vividness of the gemstone.
