Take a trip back in time and meet the five most stylish royals who left an indelible mark on the history of India (and its fashion). India has always been admired by the world for its rich culture and heritage. While there are various periods that hold an important place in our country’s history, the era before Independence is quite interesting, especially when it comes to fashion. The meeting of diverse Indian attire and European fashion created a fusion that was simply marvellous, thus leading to the emergence of style icons who are still remembered for their effortless grace and charisma. With our 69th Independence Day just around the corner, it only seemed fitting to go back to this magical time and celebrate these women. Here’s a list of five of the most beautiful royals from the nation’s pre-independence era: Maharani Gayatri Devi (1919-2009) Maharani Gayatri Devi jewellery Gayatri Devi of Cooch Behar and then Jaipur, was the epitome of classic Indian elegance and beauty. Her most treasured jewels were her wedding diamond chandelier earrings, like the Claudia Chandelier Earrings. She is just as famous for popularizing elegant pearl strands too. Listed as one of the most beautiful women in the world, her go-to style boasted of pastel French chiffon saris and dark glasses – a look Sabyasachi is heavily inspired by! Princess Niloufer of Hyderabad (1916-1989) Princess Niloufer of Hyderabad Known as the ‘Kohinoor of Hyderabad,’ Princess Niloufer’s exquisite looks and style won hearts not only in India but also across Europe. She attended various fashion shows and appeared in numerous magazines. Being the talk of the town, the princess never settled for anything less than customized luxury; hence it’s no surprise that sparkling solitaires were her favourite, like our very own Sparkle Solitaire Pendant and Insignia Ring Mount. Maharani Sita Devi of Baroda (1917-1989) Maharani Sita Devi of Baroda The flamboyant and feisty Maharani Sita Devi of Baroda loved her precious jewels and gems. In fact, even her cigarette holder was studded with rubies! While she and her husband possessed some of the greatest treasures of the world, the most notable ones are her famous seven-stranded natural pearl necklace, a three-strand diamond necklace featuring 128.80-carat diamond and 78.53-carat rocks and her four famous pearl carpets. Her painstaking detail to attention and spellbinding jewels always made her the center of attention – truly a Maharani, in every sense of the word! She would have absolutely loved our Jodha ring! Maharani Sita Devi of Kapurthala (1915-2002) Maharani Sita Devi of Kapurthala Anointed as the ‘Secular Goddess’ by Vogue at just 19 years of age, Maharani Sita Devi of Kapurthala was popular for her fine sartorial taste. Her husband showered her with resplendent jewels, crafted by Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, which she paired with fur coats over chiffon saris. The glamorous diva was often seen in diamond necklaces with gemstones. We bet she would have approved of our Scarlet Lariat Necklace and Poire Amethyst Earrings! Indira Raje of Baroda (1892-1968) Indira Raje of Baroda Indira Raje Devi, Maharani of Cooch Behar, was the mother of Maharani Gayatri Devi.
