Blue Sapphire, the birthstone of September derives meaning from several ancient languages: the Persian word “safir” (meaning “beloved of Saturn”), the Latin “sapphirus” (meaning “blue”), and the Greek word “sappheiros” for the island of Sappherine in the Arabian Sea where sapphires were found in ancient Grecian times.

In the biblical times, it was believed that the earth was embedded in a large spectacular sapphire and it was this blue that reflected and gave colour to the oceans. Because of this, it is called as the gemstone of the Heavens. Greeks sanctified this stone and associated it with Zeus, their Sky God, Kings wore it as a protector against wicked and evil and to invoke divine charm. The gem due to its hardness symbolised longevity and endurance. It is the second hardest mineral found in this Earth next to Diamonds and it is these characteristics of longevity and endurance that makes Blue Sapphire studded jewellery irresistible.

The blueness of the sapphire ranges from the breezy summer sky blue, to the intense midnight blue and to the various temperamental blues of the ocean. The texture could be fine or velvety depending on its place of origin. The Blue Sapphires from Sri Lanka, Australia and Kashmir are very famous for their hues and texture.

The early 1980’s gave a unique status to the Blue Sapphire – Prince Charles proposed to Lady Diana with an immaculate Blue Sapphire ring and since then this gemstone has become a romantic choice. A Diamond and Blue Sapphire studded Wedding ring is the preferred style for women who wish for a one of a kind, enchanting engagement ring.

The lustre, intense colour hues and velvety texture of the Blue Sapphire and the sparkle of dazzling Diamonds is a spectacular combination for making exquisite jewellery. Blue Sapphires and Diamonds go well with Conventional as well as Contemporary settings giving it the versatility to be worn with ravishing silk saris, indo-westerns and suave evening dresses. The various hues of the gemstone complement all shades of blue, beige, white and black.
