5 types of necklaces every woman must own

Ever wondered why we never miss out on a necklace someone’s wearing?

Could it be that they are singular pieces of jewellery that frame your neck and are noticed more than a ring or bangle? Perhaps. Or, could it be that it expresses one’s unique sense of style? Necklaces reflect each one’s sense of style and not only adds a lot to your outfit but speaks about your personality as well. Some like bold, edgy, geometrical designs. Some love layering while some like to just wear one single, simple piece.

The best part of necklaces is that you can either have one chain and multiple pendants that can be changed whenever you want, and you can add a few special types of necklaces to wear for that special occasion. Of course, you can also have both!

Women have occasions to wear extravagant traditional outfits for a wedding or a religious ceremony. They are more likely to resort to traditional jewellery or family heirlooms. But, some like to pair a classic outfit with a contemporary piece of jewellery. It makes sense that women have a few essential types of necklaces they can take out when an occasion warrants it.

Types of necklaces

It isn’t easy to choose among the types and designs of necklaces because there isn’t just one necklace that is perfect for you. We needn’t limit ourselves to wearing the same necklace for every occasion or wearing one type. You may want to have five or six kinds of necklaces and maybe a few extra pendants in your collection. Five must-have types are here, and each will play a big role in how you feel.

The Choker

Let’s start with the choker. Typically, a choker is around 15 -16 inches long and is worn close to the neck. It could be made of different metals or made of velvet, like in Victorian times. Recent chokers are made of gold, silver, or platinum and may have a striking pendant to add that drama to the necklace. They can be worn with any outfit and are almost always flattering to the neck. Some women also prefer the thinner choker as that can be paired with a long opera length necklace. A choker for that grand event would be studded with diamonds and crafted in a beautiful design, like the Audrey Diamond Choker Necklace. Think, Audrey Hepburn!

While we are discussing the choker, we must mention the Torque. It is another form of the choker necklace that has existed for centuries and has made a comeback. It has a unique style as it is open at the back and has a pointed front. It is also worn close to the skin and is solid. It lends itself to different outfits and is easy to clasp around your neck at a moment’s notice. You could say that it holds great appeal to busy contemporary women.

A collar necklace

Collar Collar necklaces are quite short and not more than 13 inches long. They rest above the collarbone and may have one strand or many layers. Some striking collar necklaces are made of pearls and gems. Collar necklaces can also be simpler with a few strands of gold or silver. Some collar necklaces are in silver enamel and make a stunning accessory.

The lariat necklace

Although lariat necklaces have been around for a long time, they have recently become more popular. They are long and are looped through a decorative element or a pendant instead of the usual clasp closure. The beauty of a lariat piece is that it can be worn in different ways because of their length. Being easily adjustable, it is an interesting piece to have in your collection, as it accommodates different necklines.

Station necklace

Station necklace, as the name suggests, has a few gemstones, beads, or pearls stationed across the necklace. It is a delicate piece that gets its attraction from the adornments placed around the chain. Station necklaces have made an appearance before and are now back. They can be worn to work, for a party, or a formal event, making it a must have in your collection. They are easy to personalise by replacing gemstones with some other embellishment, like different charms. They can also have different designs, such as the Matsya topaz gemstone necklace. The gold fish and topaz are placed alternatively along the necklace, and adds a fun element. Station necklaces can be worn daily, and will work just as well for a casual evening out.

Pendant necklaces

The smart woman doesn’t forget to add a pendant necklace to her collection. It is simple, classic, and can be worn with just about any outfit and at any time. It is subtle, with the focus on the pendant more than the chain. However, the chains may also draw attention more if they have a few tiny diamonds or coloured stones every few inches. But, the best part of it is that you can wear one to work, carry a different pendant in your bag and change the whole look when you go out in the evening with just a change of pendants. Who wouldn’t want to have a pendant necklace in her collection?

When you drape a necklace around your neck, remember that there are more than five types. You could go for the lariat, the opera, or the princess type of necklaces.
