CHASHME BUDDOOR- EVIL EYE BRACELETS

The Turkish evil-eye is an ancient charm used in the Middle East/West Asia to ward off the bad and the undesirable. Jewellery with the evil-eye pattern has been discovered in excavations of the older civilisations, but the present pattern is popular in Europe and South Asia also.

Warding off the evil-eye

Traditionally an eye-in-a-hand design, a simpler version includes an ‘eye’ with concentric rings of dark blue, light blue, white and a central black/dark blue spot. This talisman (called ‘nazar’ in India) is hung in above entrances and houses as a guardian against unknown forces that might harbour ill-will.

CaratLane has a set of evil-eye bracelets that are a major part of the Ornati collection by Farah Khan. The Anika Halo, Camilla Ele and the Becky Eye designs even come with the traditional thick black twine that is tied around the wrist, just like a ‘taveez’.

If the effect of the Camila Ele which has an 18K small elephant with diamonds overlapping a teeny part of the evil-eye doesn’t convince you, go for the straightforward Anika with a circle of diamonds around the eye. The Halo is a beautiful diamond studded eye-shaped outline while the Cleora has a plain outline with a diamond studded eye and the ‘nazar’ in the centre.

  • Clara Lee and Hera fortune have the complete evil-eye-in (18K gold) hand. The former also comes with black twine while the latter is fastened with a butterfly clasp on an 18K gold chain.

  • The Jen Swirl and Helga Swirl are similar with the former tied with twine and the latter clasped with a gold chain.

  • An exquisite design is the Eris Fly bracelet with a ‘nazar’ head and antennae set in 18K gold and a diamond body. Two synthetic rubies add a dash of colour to the creation.

  • The Abbi Flickr design is also a delicate bow-shaped design with the ‘nazar’ forming the knot of the bow.

  • The Bess Lucky Love bracelet has a floral design with the ‘nazar’ in the centre. The other floral designs are Ayla floral, Ceri sparkle, Jody floral and Alka Sparkle.

  • The most delicate design is the Erica heart-hand harness. A slender 18K gold chain for the wrist has a diamond studded heart with a ‘nazar’ linked to a diamond on a thin ring that can be worn on the middle finger.

  • With such a variety, just go ahead and buy an evil-eye bracelet for the person you consider perfect so that no one else’s evil gaze can harm them.
